Pittsburgh Fall Weather & Travel

What to Wear in Autumn

By , About.com Guide

Fall is one of the prettiest times in Pittsburgh, a respite between the hot days of summer and snowy cold winters. Warm days and cool nights prevail, and gorgeous fall color paints the rolling hills of Western Pennsylvania..

Watch out! The fall weather in Pittsburgh can be pretty fickle at times - feeling like summer one day and winter the next.

September - Mid-October
Light sweaters are in, as well as your hiking boots, as I'm sure you'll want to get out and enjoy the gorgeous fall leaves of Western Pennsylvania. Average highs in the low-to-mid 60s.

Mid October - November
Jackets, sweaters, and the occasional hat or pair of gloves are perfect for November. Days are brisk, nights are chilly - with average highs in the upper 40s.

Average Temperatures:
September Low 53.9º High 74.2º
October Low 42.5º High 62.5º
November Low 34.2º High 50.5º

Average Precipitation:
September 3.21 in.
October 2.25 in.
November 3.02 in.

Fall -- especially the month of October -- also tends to be Pittsburgh's sunniest season, with a bit less rain and fewer overcast days than during the rest of the year. That doesn't mean you should leave the umbrella at home, however!
