Summer in Pittsburgh is made for festivals, concerts, recreational activities and other great fun. What's even better is that some of them are free! We profile some of the best free things to do in the Pittsburgh area, including free concerts, free events, free activities and more free fun.

Three Rivers Arts Festival

Like most festivals, you can spend a fortune if you don't watch out - on food, games and merchandise. But the Three Rivers Arts Festival offers free art, free live music and free admission, making it a great way to spend a few hours without breaking the bank.

Allegheny County Summer Concert Series

Each summer, Allegheny County offers a variety of free concerts and performances at various parks and other locations throughout the county. Downtown the free concerts can be found in the courtyard of the Allegheny County Courthouse, while in the suburbs you can enjoy free concerts at the South Park Amphitheatre, Hartwood Acres, Boyce Park and North Park. All concerts in the Allegheny County summer concert series are free and open to the public.

Cinema in the Park

Grab a blanket and head out for an unforgettable evening of cinema under the stars. Pittsburgh Citipark's Cinema in the Park features popular family-friendly movies at seven Pittsburgh area parks. Movies are shown seven days a week (a different park each night) and run from the second weekend in June through the end of August. Best of all - they're free!

South Side Works Summer Entertainment Series

Head to the South Side Works on Friday and Saturday nights for FREE live music as part of the Summer Entertainment Series, held in the Southside Works Town Square. The free concerts are held each Friday & Saturday from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., May through August. And don't miss Street Parties @ the Works, held every second Saturday of the month, May through August from 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.

Stars at Riverview Summer Jazz Series

Beautiful Riverview Park in Observatory Hill is the setting for the free Stars at Riverview Jazz Series, which features the best jazz performers in Pittsburgh on Saturdays from June 8 through August 31, 2013. Bring a blanket and lawn chair with you and delight enjoy performers like Roby "Supersax" Edwards, Chico’s Qunitet and Poogie Bell. Once the jazz concert is over, stick around for a free movie courtesy of Dollar Bank Cinema in the Park. The Stars at Riverview Jazz Series is sponsored by ARAD and BNY Mellon.
