How is My Property Valued?

By Albrecht Powell, About.com

Question: How is My Property Valued?

Answer: The Allegheny County Office of Property Assessments (OPA) utilizes a staff of state certified assessors and a computer assessment system to generate residential property values through comparisons with actual sales within your local neighborhood. To increase accuracy, the Allegheny County Office of Property Assessments says that its assessors also take into account the variations that exist within Allegheny County’s unique neighborhoods and use in-house assessors to personally visit locations throughout the county to review the computerized assessment values.

In 2006, the Allegheny County Common Please Court upheld the establishment of 2002 (the last year a countywide reassessment was conducted) as a base year for the County's property assessments going forward.
