Earth Day Events & Cleanups 2012

By , About.com Guide

Earth Day is an annual national observance designed to increase public awareness of and appreciation for the environment. Learn. Act. Celebrate. Learn how to get involved on Earth Day in Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania!

Let's Pick it Up PA Day!

A great way to celebrate Earth Day is by helping renew the beauty or local communities or public areas. The Great PA Cleanup, Pennsylvania's participation in the national Great American Cleanup campaign sponsored by Keep America Beautiful, provides the perfect opportunity. The entire Great PA Cleanup campaign runs from March 1 to May 31 with cleanups sponsored by townships, boroughs and other communities across the state of Pennsylvania. Last year during the Great Pennsylvania Cleanup more than 132,000 volunteers from all 67 counties removed 6.7 million pounds of trash from roads, parks, schools, waterways, wildlife areas and communities.

Let's Pick it Up PA Day is the main event, generally held on or around Earth Day. On this day you'll find dozens of area communities hosting clean up campaigns to pick up litter, sweep streets, or otherwise clean up the neighborhood a little. The Great PA Cleanup Web site maintains a great list of Let's Pick it Up PA Day cleanups. Browse by county to find a Cleanup near you! You will also find many Pittsburgh area communities participating in community cleanups during Spring Redd Up Days, April 20-22, 2012.

Earth Day Events in Pennsylvania State Parks
