Pittsburgh area fifth-grader, Jackie Evancho, came into the national spotlight when she wowed the America's Got Talent judges after being selected as one of twelve YouTube acts
to get a chance on the live stage. Her amazingly beautiful rendition of O Mio Babbino Caro
by Giacomo Puccini wowed the crowd as well, and vaulted her into the America's Got Talent semi-finals.
Jackie Evancho was born April 9, 2000, to Michael and Lisa Evancho. The fifth-grader in the Pine-Richland school district near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, lives with her parents, two brothers, Jackie and Zachary, and a younger sister, Rachel. She started singing when she was seven years old, after watching the movie Phantom of the Opera. From there she has participated in a number of talent competitions and started her own YouTube channel where she was discovered by the America's Got Talent producers and judges.
Jackie Evancho began performing by singing at numerous events and charity functions in and around Pittsburgh. In October 2009 she made her debut TV performance filming a show of patriot music for the PBS Special Celebrate America in the WQED studios in Pittsburgh. The following month, Jackie released her debut album called Prelude to a Dream, which includes several opera selections, along with popular songs like Martina McBride's Concrete Angel, Josh Groban's Where You Are, and Amazing Grace.
Jackie has also performed onstage with producer David Foster and sang the national anthem at the 2010 Pittsburgh Pirates home opener. She is scheduled to sing at Carnegie Hall in New York City on December 2, 2010 as part of a holiday program directed by composer Tim Janis - the youngest female soloist to have ever performed there.
America's Got Talent:
Jackie Evancho performed "Puccini's O Mio Babbino Caro live for the America's Got Talent judges on Tuesday, August 11, 2010, after being selected as one of twelve YouTube acts for the NBC talent show. Host Nick Cannon said that judges Piers Morgan, Sharon Osbourne and Howie Mandel voted on 11 of the acts, and Jackie Evancho was voted through as the 12th contestant by viewers at home. Her booming rendition brought down the house and was awarded a trip to Universal Studios in Florida for receiving the most fan votes from among the YouTube contestants.
According to USA Today, the Pittsburgh native is already being called the next Susan Boyle, the surprise superstar of Britain's Got Talent in 2009. Jackie's outstanding performance was not without controversy, however. There were several doubters on the Internet chat boards questioning whether Jackie was lip syncing she was so good. To hush the doubters, Howie Mandel had Jackie sing a few notes acapella.
