Cook Forest & Clear Creek State Park
Cooks Forest, northeast of Pittsburgh, is rated as one of the nation's top 50 state parks and is classified as a National Nature Landmark. The trees of this ancient forest make this an ideal breeding location for many birds.
Erie National Wildlife Refuge
Erie National Wildlife Refuge, named for the Erie Indians (not the lake), is an 8,750-acre refuge established in 1959 to provide nesting, brooding and resting marshes for waterfowl. Birders have spotted 236 species of birds and 112 species nest here each year.
Presque Isle State Park
Presque Isle is one of the top 10 bird-watching areas in the US. This 7-mile, 3,200-acre peninsula curls into Lake Erie, making it an important resting stop for birds during their fall migration.
National Aviary
Located in West Park on the Pittsburgh North Side, the National Aviary is home to 500 birds of more than 200 species, many of which are threatened or endangered in the wild. Natural and free-flight exhibits allow visitors an up-close view of the bird world. America's only independent indoor nonprofit bird zoo.
