Schenley Park


Schenley Park, located in Pittsburgh's Oakland neighborhood, is a beautiful part of the City of Pittsburgh park system. The 456 acres of trails, woods, and attractions at this municipal park are a favorite destination for area university students, plus outdoor enthusiasts from all over the region. Schenley Park also hosts several major annual events, including the Vintage Grand Prix and the Pittsburgh Race for the Cure. Travel magazine Travel + Leisure hailed Schenley Park as one of America's Coolest City Parks in 2011.

Admission & Fees:

The grounds at Schenley Park are entirely free and open to the public. Fees do apply for certain park features, including the golf course, ice rink, swimming pool and Schenley Park Café.

What to Expect:

Schenley Park features a grand entrance, known as Schenley Plaza, as well as several miles of wooded hiking trails alongside streams, over stone bridges, and around a large lake in Panther Hollow. Take a hike, go mountain biking, play frisbee, swim in the pool or skate at the ice rink, have a picnic, take tennis lessons, or play golf (or mini golf or even frisbee golf) in this 450+ acre urban oasis. Flagstaff Hill is a popular sun and fun hangout for local university students and also hosts free movie nights during the summer months.

Sports & Recreation:

Choose your favorite from among 13 tennis courts, a soccer field, a running track and high-jump area, mountain bike trails, an ice skating rink (winter only), swimming pool (summer only), and three golf courses, including an 18-hole Frisbee golf course, a summertime mini golf course, and a traditional 4,600-yard course.

Schenley Park Café and Visitor Center:

Designed and built between 1903 and 1904, the beautifully restored historic Schenley Park Cafe and Visitor Center houses a restaurant and coffee bar, gift shop, and wheelchair-accessible restrooms. Stop in for trail maps of Schenley Park, for a light lunch, or coffee and dessert. Free wireless internet is available in the building and on the outside patio. Open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and 7-days a week during the summer month.

Events at Schenley Park:

Schenley Park plays host to a variety of cultural and charity events, such as concerts, movies, sporting events, and charity benefits. Highlights include:
  • The annual Vintage Grand Prix, a major vintage racing event that attracts some 200,000 people each July.

  • Free summer movies under the stars as part of Pittsburgh's CitiParks free Cinema in the Park summer movie series.

  • The annual Susan G. Komen Pittsburgh Race for the Cure to raise money for breast cancer awareness and research.

Weddings and Parties:

Schenley Park is available for weddings and private parties, either in the Schenley Park Cafe or an outdoor tent rental, or other outdoor event space in the Schenley Oval or gardens.
