From Philadelphia's Independence Hall, one of the birthplaces of the nation, to Gettysburg, where the Union was preserved, Pennsylvania is home to major milestones in the development of the United States of America. While the stories of these places may be well known, however, throughout Pennsylvania there are many historical destinations that are not as well known but helped shape the history of Pennsylvania. Bushy Run Battlefield, Drake Oil Well, and other lesser-known historic sites were the setting of events that changed the course of Pennsylvania's history. To increase awareness of these historical destinations and events, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission is sponsoring the fourth annual Pennsylvania Heritage Week, March 7-17, 2003. On Charter Day, March 9, the PHMC is offering free admission to its 26 sites throughout Pennsylvania to commemorate the Commonwealth's birthday. Throughout the ten day celebration, the State Museum in Harrisburg will exhibit the original 1681 Charter that was granted to Pennsylvania founder William Penn by King Charles II of Great Britain, and feature many free events that showcase the role that William Penn played in the development of Penn's Land.
