With the ending of its steel industry in the 1980s, Pittsburgh suffered great job losses, but at the same time became a model for economic diversification. Still known for its corporate headquarters (ALCOA, H.J. Heinz, PPG Industries, Bayer, Inc., USX and Allegheny Teledyne), Pittsburgh stands today as a national banking, health care and high-technology center. Pittsburgh houses more than 170 research laboratories and claims more doctoral scientists and engineers per capita than Boston, Los Angeles or San Francisco.

Growth is also fed by the tourism industry, spurred by the $800 million Pittsburgh International Airport that opened in 1992. Pittsburgh is today a global city with some 220 foreign companies representing both Eastern and Western Europe, Japan and the Pacific Rim. Nearly half of these companies have located their U.S. or world headquarters in Pittsburgh.
