The color of food is an integral part of our culture and enjoyment of life. Who would deny the mouth-watering appeal of a deep-pink strawberry ice on a hot summer day or a fresh green salad topped with deep orange salmon? Even early civilizations such as the Romans recognized that people "eat with their eyes" as well as their palates. Saffron and other spices were often used to provide a rich yellow color to various foods. Butter has been colored yellow as far back as the 1300's.

H.J. Heinz Company, headquartered in Pittsburgh PA, has been taking the appeal of colorful food to a new level with their recent introduction of Ore-Ida Funky Fries in 5 colorful new flavors and Heinz EZ Squirt Mystery Color, the latest addition to the popular Heinz EZ Squirt Condiment line. I know many of you adults out there are still a bit skeptical of funky-colored food, but Heinz appears to know what they are doing - their most recent condiment coups, Blastin' Green and Funky Purple EZ Squirt, gripped the imaginations of children and have sold more than 20 million bottles since October 2000.

The brand-new Ore-Ida Funky Fries are simply not what a potato is supposed to be - they are bold and brave and come in radical flavors, wacky shapes and cool colors. Designed to appeal to children and parents alike, the new fries come in five funky varieties:

  • Cinna-Sticks - cinnamon and sugar potatoes, perfect for breakfast, snack time or any time
  • Cocoa Crispers - cocoa-y potatoes, designed for kids with a sweet tooth
  • Kool Blue - crispy, seasoned potatoes with a radical blue color
  • Crunchy Rings - cylindrical potatoes that crunch as they delight
  • Sour Cream & Jive - crispy potatoes seasoned with sour cream and chive flavoring

Ore-Ida Funky Fries are made from wholesome, premium-quality potatoes and are the most radical thing to hit french fries since ketchup itself. The new product features eye-catching purple packaging and will be available in a frozen potato aisle near you this May.

As for the new Mystery EZ Squirt caper? Three new colors of the condiment will hit grocers' shelves nationwide in late April, but children and parents won't have a clue what's inside the EZ Squirt bottles until they squirt it or draw with it on their favorite foods. The new colors are Passion Pink, Awesome Orange and Totally Teal. The "mystery" part is that the bottle is white and comes wrapped in a special rainbow label that helps hide what's inside, keeping ketchup lovers and little detectives in suspense until the very first squeeze.

The rainbow of product colors does have an end, however. Only 1 million bottles of Heinz EZ Squirt Mystery Color are being produced for a limited time. When they're gone, they're gone (though I bet quite a few will show up on e-Bay). Super sleuths will need to emerge quickly from the shadows to nab a bottle before the trail goes cold and EZ Mystery Squirt Colors disappear forever...

Which Mystery Color will write the next chapter of EZ Squirt history? Kids are encouraged to log onto www.ezsquirt.com beginning April 1 to get candid about their favorite. In the fall, Heinz will announce which one of these three colors will become a member of the regular EZ Squirt team, so stay tuned to find out how the mystery is solved!
