Three Rivers Stadium Implosion Photos!

In 1970, the construction of Three Rivers Stadium, a multi-purpose sports facility, was completed on the North Side of the City of Pittsburgh. The stadium was situated at the confluences of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers which meet to form the Ohio River. The name "Three Rivers Stadium" appropriately marked it's identity with the geography, the sports teams and the residents of Southwestern Pennsylvania.

Since its completion, Three Rivers has been the home of three professional sports franchises: the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Pittsburgh Maulers. It was imploded at 8AM on Sunday, February 11, 2001 leaving behind memories of a rich sports history spanning more than 30 years.

Three Rivers Stadium has been the home of:

  • Two World Series Championships - 1971 & 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates

  • Four Super Bowl Championships - 1974, 1975, 1978 & 1979 Pittsburgh Steelers

  • Two National League Champions - 1971 & 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates

  • Five AFC Championships - 1974, 1975, 1978, 1979 & 1995 Pittsburgh Steelers

  • The most memorable moment in football history - 1972 "Immaculate Reception" Terry Bradshaw & Franco Harris

  • Steelers Hall of Famers:  Mel Blount, Terry Bradshaw, Joe Greene, Jack Ham, Franco Harris, Jack Lambert, Chuck Noll & Mike Webster

  • Roberto Clemente's 3000th hit - 1972

  • The first World Series Night Game - 1971

Three Rivers Stadium was built in 1970 at a cost of $35 million and was imploded on Sunday, February 11, 2001 at a cost of $5.1 million. What will become of the rubble? The steel which is currently encased in concrete will most likely be recovered and recycled by the contractor in charge of the demolition. The remaining chunks of concrete will be broken down with a  crushing machine on site to make reusable fill. In other words, Three Rivers will live on - what is now the stadium will be ground up and become part of the parking lots for the new stadium.
