While skinny-dipping at the local swimming hole has long been regarded a youthful rite of passage, being nude in America still tends to be illegal or officially frowned upon in public places. Acceptance of social nudity in this country has long lagged behind that of Europe, where many of the most popular beaches are clothing optional. Recent decades have brought about a few improvements in public acceptance, but nudism in America is still generally only tolerated when practiced in private places away from public eyes. There is no national law prohibiting nudism, but Pennsylvania law Title 18 Section 3127 states that "a person commits indecent exposure if that person exposes his or her genitals in any public place or in any place where there are present to other persons under circumstances in which he or she knows or should know that this conduct is likely to offend, affront or alarm." Nudity in Pennsylvania is generally prosecuted as a misdemeanor, largely dependent upon the public nature of the offense and on the age of other individuals present. Basically, nudism or naturism in Pennsylvania is best practiced on private property or in wilderness locations - away from the public eye.
