Game Predictions - Week 15

Dateline: 12/08/00

Before we get to this week's expert picks on the game for Sunday, the NFL has lowered the boom on the Oakland Raiders' Defensive End Regan Upshaw for his act of spitting on Josh Miller last Sunday.  Upshaw has been fined more than $29,000 by the league and said afterwards that it was MILLER who provoked him into going over the edge. YEA, RIGHT!

Meanwhile, in other news, Lamont Harris, Jerome Bettis's agent, has told the Steelers that he will wait until the season concludes before resuming contract negotiations for the Bus, who becomes a free agent. And, Kordell Stewart has won the NFL.com All-Heart Player of the Week Award, so voted by fans on the internet, beating out Steve McNair by close to 2,000 votes.

Now for the picks:

Steelers Hotline: I made the bold prediction of guaranteeing a Steeler win this Sunday earlier this week. I still stand by that prediction. I believe the Giants are "tailor-made" for the Steelers defense, and that with our offense clicking, they will be productive against a stingy Giant defense. Do you honestly think that the Giants' offensive line is ready for the aggressiveness and lightening quick speed of Joey Porter and Jason Gildon? Those guys will be coming at Kerry Collins like runaway freight trains, and I don't believe he has seen those caliber of players yet this season. The Giants come into the game with a 9-4 record, losing to the Redskins 16-6, the Titans 28-14, the lowly Cardinals 38-24, and the Lions 31-21. Like the Steelers, they have been streaky. They won their first three, lost their next two, won four in a row, lost two in a row, and are currently on a two-game winning streak. The Steelers lost their first three, won their next five, lost their next three and have won two in a row. But who did the Giants really beat? O.k., some might say the beat the division leading Eagles twice. But think about it, we had the Eagles beat, a game we should not have lost. The Giants bounced back to beat the Redskins in their second meeting last week, but only did so because the Skins missed an attempt at a game-winning field goal. They have beaten sub-par teams like the Bears, Falcons, Cowboys, Browns and the rematch with the Cardinals. So, their schedule has not been nearly as tough as Pittsburgh's. This my friends will prove what the Giants are really made of. And, I don't think they match up well against Pittsburgh. I believe Jerome Bettis will have a great rushing day, we should see Mark Bruener getting a few catches and being very effective, with Ike Hilliard's status in doubt, I don't believe Kerry Collins will really have anyone to throw to, and the "Thunder and Lightening" duo of Ron Dayne and Tiki Barber has not really made much noise since New York opened the season 3-0. Against tough defensive teams, the Giants have struggled to put up points (witness the Redskins games, and the Tennessee game). Now, they face one of the best defenses in the league, and perhaps the best set of four linebackers in the NFL. I believe this could be the Steelers' easiest game of the season. Also, Giants' Head Coach Jim Fassell boldly predicted his team would be in the playoffs, which they will probably make, but it is a mild bulletin board notice that the Steelers can put a damper in that prediction with a win. And as a capper for my comments on this game, remember this: when Pittsburgh really has its backs to the wall, that is when they play their finest football.

Pittsburgh 24, Giants 13
