Romantic Destinations Near Pittsburgh, PA

By Albrecht Powell, About.com

Take a romantic walk, relax with a spa treatment, enjoy beautiful flower arrangements, or just indulge in some chocolates. Plenty of romantic experiences await you at many of Pennsylvania’s luxurious resorts, cozy bed and breakfasts, and premier spas.

Experience a romantic escape at beautiful Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, located less than two hours south of Pittsburgh. Create your own special romance package with activities ranging from couples yoga, rock climbing and dog sledding, to massages, fireside dining and wine tasting. This enchanting setting, in the Laurel Highlands, provides a backdrop for a wonderful romantic retreat.

Tucked away in the northwestern part of the state near Bradford is Glendorn, touted in the February 2002 issue of Travel & Leisure magazine as one of the top 50 romantic getaways in the world. The 1929-era vacation lodge, situated on 1,000 secluded mountain acres, offers a variety of special romance packages and experiences.

Inspired by the classic romantic movie Gone with the Wind, Tara - A Country Inn features 27 luxurious rooms and sweets, all with fireplaces and most with Jacuzzi tubs. Nearby, the restored Buhl Mansion offers 10 more lavishly appointed guest rooms in a 1890 Romanesque-style castle. Their Gone With the Wind Getaway packages takes the work out of romance.

Hungry for chocolate? Satisfy the craving at the Spa at the Hotel Hershey. Romantic getaway packages at the luxurious Hotel Hershey can include special chocolate themed spa treatments such as a Hershey Rain Shower, Whipped Cocoa Bath or Milk & Honey Soak. The AAA Four Diamond hotel offers elegant accommodations as well as golf (in season) and special chocolate-themed events during the month of February.

Probably the most luxurious and romantic (albeit expensive) resort located within an easy drive of Pittsburgh is The Greenbrier, nestled in the beautiful Allegheny Mountains in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. This AAA-rated five diamond hotel and resort offers an array of guest bedrooms, suites and estate houses, plus golf, the award-winning Greenbrier spa, gourmet dining and a wide variety of unique recreational activities. Note: The Greenbrier is closed for renovations from January 3 - April 1, 2007.
