PITTSBURGH LIGHT UP NIGHT EVENTS - 2009

"Spirits of Giving From Around the World" Exhibit
6:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.
PPG Place Wintergarden, One PPG Place
Visit an enchanting display of life-sized Santas and original paintings which capture a whole world of Christmas folklore and fantasy.

Gingerbread House & Train Display
10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Two PPG Place & PPG Wintergarden
Don't miss this magnificent display of delicious dwellings created by area hotels, chefs, senior citizens, and students - all surrounded by a unique train display created by local artist, Don Jones. Proceeds from the sale of the houses benefit Children’s Hospital’s Free Care Fund.

Ice Skating at PPG

The Rink at PPG Place
Light Up Night is opening day for Downtown Pittsburgh's outdoor skating rink. Enjoy an exhilarating holiday tradition as you glide around the breathtaking 65’ Christmas tree on the PPG Place Plaza ice rink.

The Pittsburgh Crèche Dedication Ceremony
12 Noon
US Steel Plaza, November 17 - January 7
This life-size nativity scene is an actual replica of the one in St. Peter's Square in Rome, Pittsburgh's own symbol of Christmas. Dedication is at 12 noon on Pittsburgh Light Up Night.

Holiday Enchanted Forest & Eco-Craft Cove
5:00 – 8:30 p.m.
Penn Avenue & Stanwix Street
Meet the Emerald Fairies as they welcome you to the Eco-Craft Cove. Children and their families can create a keepsake holiday bird feeder made from pine cones and other natural materials and follow green luminaries back to Fifth Avenue Place for more family fun.

This talented group kicks off the evening’s festivities with a dazzling performance.

Fifth Avenue Place - Family Festivities

Fifth Avenue Place
Bring the whole family and celebrate with special holiday entertainment and activities. Plus, celebrate Pittsburgh's championship moments frozen in time at Fifth Avenue FREEZE.

LuminoCITY
5:00 - 9:00 p.m.
Fifth Avenue Place
Honoring the city’s past and looking forward to its future, LuminoCITY, created by artist Joe Wos, features the city skyline built with recycled steel that will be lit up over the evening by LED lights. Children of all ages are invited to join staff from the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh to create their own LED light and toss it on the skyline – lighting up the city and its future!

Tribute of Light Ceremony/Plaza Tree Lighting
5:30 - 6:00 p.m.
The Rink at PPG Plaza
The plaza will glisten with the glow of candlelight, as over 300 individuals carrying hand-held Tributes of Light candles will surround The Rink at PPG Place. Each candle will be dedicated in the name of someone touched by cancer. The ceremony culminates with the lighting of the 65-foot Plaza Christmas tree. All proceeds from this event benefit the American Cancer Society.

One Oxford Center Holiday Tree Lighting & Festivities
5:45 - 9:00 p.m.
One Oxford Centre
Join us for the magnificent tree lighting with Mayor Luke Ravenstahl at 5:45 p.m., followed by family activities, visits with Santa Claus, face painting, Mike the Balloon Guy, live musical performances by the North Star Kids of Pittsburgh, live reindeer, and horse-drawn carriage rides.

Macy's Window Unveiling & Holiday Activities
5:30 - 6:45 p.m.
Macy's Downtown, Fifth Avenue & Smithfield Street
Join in the countdown to the unveiling of the spectactular holiday window displays by Mario Lemieux, Pittsburgh's own iJustine, the Franklin Regional Marching Band, The Dream Intended and Santa. Plus, enjoy live performances by The Pittsburgh Ballet "The Nutcracker," and Reign Dance Prodution. Children will enjoy meet and greet with Sailor Mickey and Smurf, face painting, balloon twisting, and more!

Unity Tree Lighting
6:45 - 7:00 p.m.
Penn Avenue & Stanwix Street
Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield continues a proud Pittsburgh tradition and officially kicks off the holiday season with the lighting of the Unity Tree.

Hallmark Light Up Night March
7:15 - 9:30 p.m.
Roberto Clemente Bridge
March from Macy's to the Roberto Clemente Bridge with the Franklin Regional and Mount Lebanon High School Marching Bands.

Light Up Night Bridge Party
7:30 - 9:30 p.m.
Roberto Clemente Bridge
Party on the Roberto Clemente Bridge; featuring Pittsburgh's complete oldies band, Johnny Angel and the Halos. The stage on the Roberto Clemente Bridge will be emceed by WTAE-TV's Andrew Stockey and Wendy Bell and Jim Merkel, 3WS 'Merkel in the Morning.'

Light Up Night - Fireworks Finale

Wrap up the evening with everyone’s favorite – fireworks! Enjoy the show as Macy’s fireworks finale, hosted by Zambelli Fireworks Internationale, lights up the sky with a spectacular burst of light and glittering colors set to holiday music. Fireworks will be launched from the Andy Warhol Bridge (Seventh Street Bridge) and two barges on the Allegheny River, and will feature several special effects never before used on Light Up Night.
