Lunch brings lines of people - produce workers, office staff and tourists - to Primanti Brothers in the Strip District for their incomparable deli sandwiches. The secret of this popular Pittsburgh sandwich lies in the thick-sliced Italian bread stuffed with tomatoes, french fries, coleslaw and deli meat of choice - a mouthful of taste that wins nods of respect from visitors and honorary Pittsburgher status from the locals. Wash it down with a cold Iron City beer.

Meat and potato lovers need look no further that The City Grill (South Side) and Tessaro's (Bloomfield), sister bistros that flame everything to char-grilled perfection. Or try the sports-themed Jerome Bettis Grille 36 on the North Shore, Max's Allegheny Tavern (German) on the North Side, the popular Cheesecake Factory at the South Side Works or the home-grown but expanding Quaker Steak & Lube for awesome wings. Steak means Mortons of Chicago (inside the CNG tower), Ruth's Chris (inside PPG headquarters) or Pittsburgh Rare in the lobby of the Sheraton Hotel at Station Square. Although Pittsburgh isn't really known for its pizza, there are a few good options such as Mineos in Squirrel Hill and Legends on the North Shore. If you don't mind a drive, many say that Harry's Pizza in Waterdam Plaza in McMurray serves up the best pizza in th 'Burgh.

Favorites with the downtown Pittsburgh business crowds include The Carlton, Eleven, The Common Plea, Seventh Street Grille, the Original Fish Market, Nine on Ninth and Six Penn Kitchen for both lunch and dinner. Local favorites on the South Side include Le Pommier (country French), Dish (Sicilian), Mallorca (Spanish), the Zenith Tea Room (vegetarian) and the 17th Street Cafe. The fashionable East End is also home to many popular eateries, including Red Room in East Liberty, and Soba, Girasole, and Umi (Japanese), all in Shadyside. Just across the Allegheny River in Sharpsburg is the don't miss Bona Terra.
