How to Become a Registered Voter in Pittsburgh, PA

In order to vote in a local, state, or national election in Pennsylvania, you must register to vote. Here are the steps you need to take to register in Allegheny County. Deadline for registration in an election is 30 days prior.

Here's How:
  1. If you will be at least 18 years old by election day, are a U.S. citizen and a legal resident of Allegheny County and have not been imprisoned for a felony conviction within the past 5 years, then you are eligible to vote.
  2. You may register in person at the Allegheny County Election Division.
  3. You may register by mail. Registration cards are available from the Division of Elections, local municipality offices, public libraries, driver photo centers, or at the LWV Community Information Center.
  4. If you aren't sure if you are registered or not, you can all the Allegheny County Division of Elections to determine your status.
  5. Military personnel (including spouse and dependents) can write to the Division of Elections, and request a military ballot. You do not need to be registered, but you do need to be 18 years of age, by the day after the election.
  6. If you will be out of the county on election day, contact the Department of Elections for a Absentee Ballot Application Form.


Tips:

  1. The Allegheny County Election Division is located at 604 County Office Building, 542 Forbes Street, Pittsburgh, at the corner of Forbes and Ross Streets. Phone: (412) 350-4500
  2. There is a 30-day length of residency requirement in Pennsylvania.
  3. Pennsylvania is a closed primary state, so only people who are registered to the party in question will be able to elect candidates for that party in the primary elections.
  4. If an emergency (unexpected trip or illness) arises, you can vote in person or by "Emergency Application" through the Department of Elections up until 5:00pm the Friday before the election.
