San Francisco often touts its many steps and staircases as a tourist attraction, but Pittsburgh is the city that actually tops the list for number of steps - with 712 sets of stairs, more than twice the number that San Francisco can boast. Dozens of these quirky Pittsburgh stairways are even legal streets -- "paper streets" that appear on our maps, and often confound unsuspecting tourists who turn a corner expecting a road, only to be faced with a set of stairs.
Pittsburgh's steps are much more than an annoyance for visitors, or a means of exercise for our residents, however. Plenty of the city's steps also offer great vantage points from which to view and/or photograph the city.
