One of the most highly anticipated films of the year (certainly in Pittsburgh), Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises, opens in theaters on Friday, July 20th. Pittsburgh residents will have several great glimpses of our city's picturesque skyline, as well as the unforgettable scene where a crowd of 10,000+ extras dressed in black and yellow filled the stands at Heinz Field to cheer on the fictional football team, the Gotham Rogues. Look for cameos by Steelers players including Ben Roethlisberger and Hines Ward, as well as Mayor Luke Ravenstahl who appears as kicker for the opposing team. Additional Pittsburgh scenes feature Carnegie Mellon University (Mellon Institute serves as Blackgate prison), Trinity Cathedral and the Kaufmann's clock, among others.
Midnight showings of The Dark Knight Rises are sold out at most larger area theaters, including the Carnegie Science Center (IMAX) on the North Side, SouthSide Works Cinema, Cinemark at the Pittsburgh Mills (IMAX) and the AMC Loews Theatre at The Waterfront. Many area theaters are also participating in the "Dark Knight" marathon with the first two films in the Batman trilogy showing Thursday evening just before the midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises."
