Each year, Smithsonian Magazine sponsors a free Museum Day across the nation, set this year for Saturday, September 24, 2011. On this day, participating museums around the nation offer free admission to anyone who brings the Museum Day Admission Card found in the September 2011 issue of Smithsonian Magazine, or printed from the Smithsonian.com Web site. The free admission ticket is valid for two people and is limited to one per household.

Several Pittsburgh area museums are participating in this special free Museum Day promotion, including the Carnegie Museums of Art & Natural History, the Senator John Heinz Regional History Center and the Westmoreland Museum of American Art. Further afield, museums such as the Altoona Railroaders Memorial Museum, West Virginia Independence Hall in Wheeling, WV, and Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex in Moundsville, WV, are also participating in free Museum Day admission. Check the list of participating museum venues to see if your favorite museum is participating.
