If you're new to skiing or snowboarding, January is the month to get out and learn. The Pennsylvania Ski Areas Association, in conjunction with SnowSports Industries America, a national nonprofit trade organization for snowsports suppliers, is offering reduced-cost learning programs at many area ski resorts throughout the month.
Pittsburgh area ski resorts participating in these special January ski and snowboard programs include Blue Knob, Hidden Valley, Nemacolin Woodlands, and Seven Springs. Check with each resort for special restrictions and blackout days.
Of course, Boyce Park in Monroeville is always an economical place to learn to ski and snowboard with adult lift tickets just $13 on weekends, and $10 mid-week. The hills are short and the snow is not always very good, but you can't beat the price, especially for beginners.
If downhill skiing is not your thing, then why not try your hand at cross-country? The Pennsylvania Cross-Country Skiers Association (PACCSA) is offering free cross-country lessons for all ski levels at Laurel Ridge State Park on Sunday Jan. 9, 16, 23 and 30, plus Feb. 20 beginning at 1 p.m. If you need equipment, you can rent everything needed at the concession building near the parking lot just off Route 653. No reservations required! Right here near the city, Venture Outdoors also offers a number of cross-country adventure programs, although they are not free.

Love skiing in PA! I stayed at Nemacolin and their packages are great (http://www.nemacolin.com/specials-packages/adventure-vacation-packages). Perfect way to tie a relaxing vibe into a ski vacation.
