Penguins Get it Done: Stanley Cup Returns to Pittsburgh
Victory sure is sweet. Pittsburgh, as the first city to bring home both Lord Stanley's Cup and the Vince Lombardi trophy in a single year, has thousands of fans celebrating in the streets tonight after the Pittsburgh Penguins defeat the defending champion Detroit Red Wings 2-1 in game 7 at Joe Louis Arena. Mad Max (Maxime Talbot) scored both of Pittsburgh's goals, while goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury turned away 23 shots, including two spectacular saves in the game's final seconds. Sidney Crosby, the youngest team captain to ever win the Stanley Cup, was injured early in the second period, and outside of one short shift early in the third, never returned to the ice. Evgeni Malkin, who led the league with 36 playoff points -- including eight in this series -- took home the Conn Smythe Trophy as series MVP.
Tonight's win clinched the third Stanley Cup in franchise history for the Pittsburgh Penguins, and the team's first win since 1992. Mad Max was awesome, as was every player on the team - but I tip my hat to "Flower" (net minder Marc-Andre Fleury), who came up big when it mattered most, finally silencing the critics who says he's just a B-level goalie. Congratulations Pittsburgh!
