Pittsburgh Peregrines on FalconCam
A new high-tech video camera installed at the top of the Cathedral of Learning on the University of Pittsburgh campus in Oakland offers real-time viewing of the nest of peregrine falcons Erie and Dorothy. The pair even has eggs in their nest which, if all goes well, are expected to hatch in late April.
Anyone with a high-speed internet connection can view the Peregrine FalconCam day or night to watch the parents incubate their eggs, watch the chicks hatch, see the parents feed their young, and possibly even see the chicks take their first flight. A still camera feed follows Pittsburgh's other downtown peregrine falcon pair, Louie an Tasha II, in their nest on the 37th floor of the Gulf Tower. Those images are refreshed every 15 seconds. In mid-March 2008, Tasha II laid four eggs that are expected to hatch in mid-April, about two weeks before the eggs at the Cathedral of Learning. Both the live streaming FalconCam and the still camera feed can be accessed directly from the Web site of the National Aviary, at www.aviary.org.
