World's Most Valuable Baseball Card

Two million dollars could buy a mansion. Or a heck of a nice yacht. Or a baseball card.

The rare 1909 Honus Wagner baseball card, described by collectors as the "holy grail of baseball cards," sold to a Southern California collector for a stunning $2.3 million. Honus Wagner, who played shortstop for the Pittsburgh Pirates, was one of the first five players to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

What makes this particular baseball card so valuable is its rarity. The Honus Wagner card was printed in 1909 by the Piedmont Cigarette Company as part of a tobacco promotion. It was recalled almost immediately, however, at the request of Honus Wagner, who objected because he didn't want his image to be used for something that might encourage children to start smoking. As a result there are believed to be only about 60 such baseball cards in existence.
