Construction crews digging a trench in the early phases of the $35 million Point State Park renovation project have accidentally unearthed a number of very old human bones. Archaeologists have identified the bones as probably coming from "more than one person and possibly dating back to colonial times," according to an article by Don Hopey in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette.
Historians and preservationists who have strongly criticized the Point State Park renovation because of plans to bury the colonial-era brick of Fort Pitt's historic Music Bastion wall point to the bones as another example of why the renovation plans are not in line with the memorial park that Point State Park was created to be. Ironically enough, the controversial renovation of Point State Park is underway as part of the 250 anniversary of Pittsburgh's founding to be celebrated in 2008.

Certainly not a surprise. This ill-conceived project should never have been allowed on this hallowed ground.
