Shrimp in the Mon

Thursday August 24, 2006
Strange, but true. Shrimp have been discovered in the Monongahela River. Don't expect to make a meal of them, though. The shrimp, known as "glass shrimp" or "grass shrimp" are edible, but very tiny. These shrimp are native to the Mississippi River basin, and scientists say the discovery this far east means that the river's water quality is improving. Not bad for a river that was once the repository for acid mine drainage and pollution from the steel mills and factories that once crowded its banks.
