Best Cities for Seniors

Pittsburgh is ranked among the five best cities for seniors, according to a new survey conducted for Bankers Life and Casualty Company. The poll includes several cities, like Pittsburgh, not commonly associated with senior living because it wasn't looking for the best places to be retired. Instead, they were looking to highlight the best cities for seniors "regardless of whether they are retired, working, active or non, healthy or not," according to Bankers' Chief Operating Officer Scott Perry.

The major categories included in the survey were health, disease, economics, social, environment, spiritual, transportation, housing, and crime. Each category was statistically weighted to reflect the needs of the senior population.

I'm not surprised to see Pittsburgh on the list. We not only have one of the largest senior populations per capita in the United States, but outside of the winter weather there's not much not to like. Great health care and transportation, plenty of senior programs and services, nice retirement communities, dozens of golf courses, and a lively arts scene.

Portland, OR was ranked #1, followed by Seattle, San Francisco, Milwaukee and Pittsburgh rounding out the top five. For a complete listing of the best cities for seniors, visit www.bankers.com.
