Steelers Defeat Eagles, 27-3

Sunday November 7, 2004
The Pittsburgh Steelers have physically dominated the NFL the past two weeks, beating the last two undefeated teams back-to-back - the only NFL team to ever achieve this feat so late in the season. And the Steelers not only beat them both, they stomped all over them - ending the Patriots 21-game winning streak last week (34-20), and coming back just a week later to overwhelm the Eagles (27-3). That's a combined showing of 61-23 over what were considered to be the two best teams in pro football.

The final score against the Eagles doesn't even tell the whole story. It would have actually been much worse if Burress hadn't dropped the ball on his way to the endzone after a 47-yard catch early in the third quarter, or if the Steelers hadn't chosen not to try to score after driving to the 8 with just under 3 minutes left in the game. Just like last week's game against New England, the Steelers chose not to rub in their victory.

I can't say enough good things about rookie quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger, who seems to have added the spark that the Steelers needed to really put things together this year. But this is a Steelers team that is winning by playing as a team - with every player on the field doing an amazing job. Hopefully, this week's win will mean that the unconvinced media, like About Football's James Alder, will finally start giving the Steelers the credit they deserve.

Playing much like the Steelers of old, with a strong rushing game and unbeatable defense, it was very fitting that today's Steelers team was being cheered on today by many of the members of the famous '79 Steelers - in attendance at Heinz Field as part of a 25th anniversary celebration.
