Fallen Soldier Finally Arrives Home
Friday November 7, 2003
The remains of Army Sgt. Ernest Bucklew, arrived Thursday night from Iraq in time for a joint funeral for he and his mother this weekend.
33-year-old Sgt. Bucklew was one of 16 U.S. soldiers killed when their helicopter was shot down by guerillas outside of Baghdad last Sunday.
Two days earlier, his mother, Mary Ellen Bucklew, 57, of Darlington, Beaver County, died of a burst aneurism as she drove home from work.
Donald R. Bucklew, Ernie's father, told the Beaver County Times that losing his wife and son in two days was almost more than he could bear. Relatives said he was nearly "out of his mind."
The Army sped up the return of Sgt. Bucklew's body at his family's request, so that mother and son could be laid to rest together. A joint funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Highlands Middle School in Beaver Falls, with burial to follow at Beaver Falls Cemetery in Chippewa. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that contributions be made to a scholarship fund for Ernie's sons. Contributions to the Ernest G. Bucklew Memorial Trust Fund can be made at any First National Bank.
