Marlins Catcher Charged with Rape
Thursday August 28, 2003
Pittsburgh police have charged Florida Marlins baseball player, Ramon Castro, with raping a 28-year-old woman in his hotel room at the Westin Convention Center Hotel in downtown Pittsburgh.
After several hours of questioning by police, backup Marlins catcher Ramon Castro was charged Thursday evening with rape, indecent deviate sexual intercourse, sexual assault, and unlawful restraint.
Details of the alleged assault are sketchy, but Pittsburgh Police Lt. Kevin Kraus stated in a press conference that Castro met the young woman Wednesday evening at the Original Fish Market restaurant and then went with her to Strip District bar, Tequila Willies, for a drink. He then returned with her and another couple to his hotel room at the nearby Westin Convention Center Hotel downtown. Kraus said that the woman alleged the rape took place in Castro's room after the other couple left.
Castro's lawyer, well-known defense attorney and former U.S. attorney J. Alan Johnson, claims that his client is innocent and that professional athletes have become targets for such bogus claims.
Shades of Kobe Bryant?
