Against All Odds
Tuesday July 22, 2003
They rarely play the lottery and only bought a single, last-minute ticket, yet Scott & Marian Calligan of Cranberry Township came up big winners in the $261 million July 9 Powerball lottery drawing.
PA Gov. Ed Rendell presented a check to the young couple during a press conference this evening in Harrisburg. They opted for a lump sum payment of $73.6 million instead of the $130 million in annuity payments. A couple in Hermann, Mo., won the other half of the Powerball prize.
The couple said they were in "shock and denial" when they realized their ticket matched the winning numbers on the televised drawing. "We didn’t jump up and down or anything," Scott said. "We just sort of looked at the TV and looked at the ticket and looked at the TV and looked at the ticket."
Scott and Marian are the proud parents of two young children, Marissa, 8, and Bryan, 5. Scott purchased their winning ticket the night of the drawing at the 7-Eleven store located at 4501 Glen Eden Road in Cranberry, Butler County. He only bought the single $5 ticket, and even let the computer generate the numbers. Who says there's no such thing as luck?
